What Is Tooth Whitening?

Stained yellow teeth can have a massive effect on our confidence and the way we feel. If you are looking for something to brighten up your smile, professional teeth whitening is the most cost-effective and straight forward dental treatment available to achieve this.

Teeth whitening can provide fantastic results by lightening the existing shade of your teeth. The treatment itself is completely safe when carried out under professional supervision. There are other whitening options and, depending on the severity of discolouration, it is confusing to know which treatment is best for you. Our dentist will answer these questions for you, and ensure that you have the most suitable treatment for your teeth.

What Causes Teeth To Become Stained Or Yellow

Before attempting teeth whitening, it is important to first find out what is causing them to stain in the first place. There are two types of tooth stains, extrinsic stains and intrinsic stains.

Extrinsic stains are stains on the external surface of the teeth. Some of the most common causes of external stains on the teeth are coffee, tea, red wine and smoking.

Extrinsic stains may be controlled by professional cleaning by a Dental Hygienist. Here at Burnside we use a system called Refresh to achieve this style of teeth whitening. Check out the video - credit : Dr. Fabio Cozzolino Zerodonto

Intrinsic stains are stains inside the teeth. Intrinsic stains occur when the inner part of the tooth (called the dentin) gets a yellow tint or turns dark. Common causes are from certain medication we take during tooth development and ageing. Teeth whitening treatment for intrinsic stains is slightly more complex, as some stains may be removed using whitening while others may require crowns and veneers. It’s best to seek expert advice from your dentists who can advise on the recommended treatment.

The most common reason for having yellower teeth is that this is your natural colour. It may just be that you are not happy with this or that your teeth have darkened with age. This too can be dealt with by our dentists using a professional tooth whitening system.

FAQs

Got a question? We’re here to help.
  • How Does Professional Teeth Whitening Work?

The dentist will scan your mouth to make a bleaching tray and tell you how to use it with a bleaching gel. This gel contains hydrogen peroxide.  Then, using your trays at home, you regularly apply the gel for a specified period of time over 6-8 weeks. Bleach goes through the enamel of the teeth into the dentine and changes the colour of the teeth.

  • Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

Teeth whitening is a form of dentistry and should only be carried out by a dentist or another regulated dental professional, such as a dental hygienist or dental therapist, on the prescription of a dentist. If the trays do not fit properly, some of the bleaching gel may leak out onto your gums and into your mouth, causing blistering and sensitivity.

When supervised by a dental professional, teeth whitening is perfectly safe.

  • Will My Teeth Go Too White With Professional Teeth Whitening?

Tooth whitening is a gradual process and the dentist will use a colour chart to gauge the degree of colour change.

  • I Have Sensitive Teeth - Can I Still Have Professional Tooth Whitening?

No matter what treatment you use, there's a chance your gums and teeth will be sensitive to the chemicals used in teeth whitening, particularly if you already have sharp teeth. This means that the process may take longer with more extended periods between applications. Specialist toothpaste-like Sensodyne can help also help with sensitivity.

  • I Have One Dark Tooth. Is Teeth Whitening Right For Me?

The dark tooth will need to be treated separately as part of the bleaching process but the cause of the dark tooth and treatment thereof would need to be addressed first.

  • How Do I Go About Starting Professional Teeth Whitening At Burnside?

Either talk to your dentist at your routine examination or make an appointment to discuss tooth whitening where your dentist will go through the process with you.
